How to Get the Most Relaxing Massage

I can think of few things better than a massage done by someone who is really talented. I find that massage therapists generally fall into two camps:

  1. Therapists that just have an intuitive knack for giving a great massage.
  2. Therapists that developed over time the touch necessary to give a great massage.

Just like therapists who give massages need to know how to do them correctly, people who receive them should be aware of what goes into the best massages. The information I pulled together here is designed to help you get the most relaxing massage possible.

As a chiropractor, there is some overlap in what I do and what a good massage therapist will do. I have known and worked with many massage therapists over time in my practice and a good massage therapist is worth their weight in gold.

First and foremost, make sure to talk to your massage therapist about any concerns that you may have. Remember your therapist wants to help and will be happy to answer any questions you may have. This will help you feel serene and calm while you get your massage.

Remember that when muscles are tight, “knots” form; they are known as trigger points. If recurring muscular pain is an issue, then I suggest that you do some research about trigger points, consult with a chiropractor or a trusted massage therapist. These trigger points can even refer pain to other parts of the body and cause other symptoms at various locations in your body. Just ask a massage therapist, look up information online or read a book to learn about trigger points and what you can do to relieve them.

Now that you are aware of what those “knots” are and that muscle work can really help with them, I can tell you why you should use a massage therapist.  Massages are great for decreasing stress and eliminating aches and pains. If your back hurts often, or you feel you live a very stressful life, consider scheduling a massage a few times a month. Bob Hope, who lived to be one hundred years old, made a daily massage as part of his health regimen.

While massages at home can be relaxing, if you have pets or children that might make noise, you should strongly consider going to a massage studio instead. Massages in areas that are full of noise make it very difficult to relax. When traffic is roaring by outside, or someone is screaming in the next room, who can relax? A massage studio will help your level of relaxation during the process. You’ll be glad you did.

Your therapist should be able to feel and observe your reaction to the massage; that is a cardinal rule about massage. They should be paying attention to how you’re tensing up and responding. A good therapist will have the ability to read the signals that your body is giving to them and adjust their technique to give you the best massage.

This might sound like strange advice but if you’re getting a massage, be sure you watch what you eat before it. Overeating can make you uncomfortable, and that may lessen the benefits you experience from the massage. You should be sure that you eat something light and healthy so that you’re able to have a more pleasurable experience.

Make sure to hydrate appropriately before and after a massage. Proper hydration will make for a better massage. Drinking water alone can make muscles that are tight begin to loosen and, with a good massage, toxins that can cause muscle discomfort can be mobilized and flushed out of the body. So drink up before and after a massage.

When you are receiving a massage, it is essential that you try to relax. Lay face down, take some deep breaths and try to relax. You should breathe deeply at times during the massage to help keep your muscles relaxed.

Now that you have all of this advice, you’ll be ready to pick out the best type of massage for your needs. Continue to do your research and learn about massages so that you can get the most benefit from them. A massage can be a great way to de-stress or deal with difficulties in your life. Remember, “The saw that hasn’t been sharpened takes twice as long to cut with.” Sharpen your saw by getting a good massage and you will be more effective throughout the coming days and weeks.

I wish you all the best. Don’t skimp on making sure you feel as good as possible.
